Smart Cities

For a few years now, Ericsson has been exploring the future of connectivity through the Networked Society. The spread of networked, digital information and communication technologies will require massive changes to the current infrastructure for broadband, mobility and the cloud. Ericsson’s vision is that by the year 2020, everything that can benefit from a connection will be connected which means we have our work cut out for us.

One of the current global trends is the movement of people from the countryside into cities. Along with the growth of megacities comes its own set of issues and challenges that we believe can be partly solved with and supported by connected technology. Rapid urbanization requires the continuous rebuilding of infrastructures and the assurance of sufficient housing. There is also a need to address crime, sanitation, pollution, education and health care. Traffic is another concern both in terms of private and public transport systems for large cities. Sustainability issues will also need to be addressed in terms of energy production, distribution and recycling.

In this Research Topic, we will explore these issues and apply Ericsson technology to help create solutions for smarter cities.
